I’m Losing My Rental Income!

Today after months of disagreements, my roommate and I decided it would be best if this is the last month we lived together. This means I will be losing about $600 in rental income every month starting June 2009. We (my girlfriend and I) found a roommate in April 2008 and the agreement had been working well. For whatever the roommate decided that the rules we all agreed upon could be relaxed. After months of heated discussions, this weekend was the final straw. It became apparent the relationship would not work out. While the financial hit is going to be tough, I think it is actually for the best. My girlfriend and I have talked about reducing our eating out to maybe 1 time a week. I will go through all of my finances on a later post.
Is My Girlfriend A Better Investor Than Me?

A couple days ago I read the article How Women Invest Differently Than Men on Yahoo! Finance. The point of the article was that women have less volatile portfolios, little ego and therefore better returns compared to men. Now I’m no expert but I do have an interest in stocks. My girlfriend, on the other hand, has virtually no interest in the market. That gave me an idea! What would happen if I went head- to-head with my girlfriend in a stock picking competition? So here are the game rules:
1. We each pick 1 stock per week for 4 weeks.
2. Any stock is fine
3. Each stock is replaced at the end of the week
4. The best performance % wins
First week Picks:
Me – Buy XLF (Financial Select Sector SPDR) at $11.75
My analysis – any recovery will have to include the financials, they have had a nice run up but I think they could go higher.
My GF – Buy WFMI (Whole Foods Market) at $20.55
My GF’s analysis – every time she visits Whole Foods there are more people there than the last time she went.
